They were born after the story stopped working but before anyone admitted it.

The housing was already out of reach. The debt was already the price of entry. The job was already insufficient for the life the job was supposed to provide. The climate was already in the news, not as warning but as weather — the fire season that now lasts all year, the flood that used to be rare, the heat that breaks records so often the records have stopped meaning anything.

They did not experience the arrangement as prosperity. They experienced it as cost. The cost of education. The cost of health. The cost of a room in a city where the rooms were priced for someone else. They were told the arrangement would provide for them the way it provided for their parents. It did not. The math was visible. They did the math.

The older generations had to unlearn the story. This generation never learned it. They arrived after the story had already diverged from the ground, and they could feel the divergence in their lives before they had a word for it. The word some of them reached for was socialism. The word does not matter. What matters is what the word is reaching toward — the sense that an arrangement organized around accumulation without limit will not provide for people who are not accumulating.

They are not ideological. They are practical. They have watched the institutions fail — the pandemic response that was not ready, the climate summits that did not deliver, the financial system that was bailed out while their prospects were not, the political system that serves its donors more reliably than its voters. They do not need to be convinced that the arrangement is broken. They live in the breakage.

What they sense, and what the professional class keeps trying to talk them out of sensing, is simple. The system produces more than enough and distributes less than necessary. The scarcity they experience is not a scarcity of resources. It is a scarcity of access. The gate is not empty. The gate is expensive. The arrangement does not lack the capacity to house them, heal them, educate them, or employ them meaningfully. It lacks the structure to do so, because the structure was optimized for returns, not for people.

They know this the way you know the floor is uneven — not because someone told you, but because you are standing on it.

The professionals say they are entitled. The commentators say they want handouts. The magazines write cover stories about the danger they represent. The danger they represent is that they do not believe the story. The story requires belief to function. A generation that does not believe the story cannot be recruited into defending the arrangement the story supports. This is what frightens the defenders. Not the politics. The disbelief. The quiet refusal to pretend the math works when the math does not work.

They are not asking for a different system. Most of them cannot articulate what they are asking for because the vocabulary available — left, right, socialist, capitalist — was designed for a different argument in a different century. What they are asking for is closer to this: that the cost be borne by the people who produce it, that the returns reach the people who generate them, and that the arrangement serve the life inside it rather than the other way around.

This is not a political position. It is a description of what working would look like. The fact that it sounds radical is a measure of how far the arrangement has drifted from working.

They will be told they are naive. They will be told the world does not operate that way. They will be told that what they are feeling is a phase, a mood, a failure to appreciate how good they have it compared to some other time or some other place.

They should not listen. What they are feeling is accurate. The ground is uneven. The cost is real. The math does not work. The story is not holding. Their bodies are telling them something the dashboard cannot show, and their refusal to ignore what their bodies are telling them is not a weakness. It is the beginning.

Not of revolution. Not of ideology. Of the demand that the arrangement account for the lives it claims to serve.

They are standing on the ground. They can feel it. They should trust what they feel.
