ECONOMIC INVERSION

Francis of Assisi — Stripped naked, owned nothing, refused the Church’s wealth logic. Wept watching the institution capture his movement within his lifetime.

Dorothy Day — Fed the poor without means-testing. Refused tax exemption to stay outside institutional capture. Still running. Still small.

Simone Weil — Worked factory lines by choice. Understood the Code’s deepest violence as the destruction of attention. Died giving hers completely.

TRUTH-TELLING

Socrates — Asked questions that revealed people didn’t know what they thought they knew. The only figure the Code executed directly rather than capturing.

Spinoza — Excommunicated, rejected, ground lenses for a living. Demolished theological justification for hierarchy from a position of radical outsideness. Refused the university chair that would have enabled capture.

Harriet Tubman — Nineteen missions. Seventy people freed. Armed. No central node to destroy. Never lost a passenger. The Code put a price on her head because it couldn’t capture what it couldn’t find.

NONVIOLENT FORCE

Gandhi — Salt march, swadhi, satyagraha. Made the Code’s violence visible to itself. The method survived him. King absorbed it. Mandela absorbed it.

Martin Luther King — Named the psychological engine the Code exploits. Pivoted toward class justice at the end. Assassinated before the Poor People’s Campaign. The Code captured his image and buried his economics.

ALTERNATIVE COMMUNITY

The Essenes — Communal ownership, no slavery, no accumulation. Withdrew completely. Survived two thousand years in desert caves in jars. Low visibility taken to its logical conclusion.

George Fox / Quakers — No clergy, no titles, no hierarchy encoded in grammar. Sitting in silence. The inner light available to all equally. Partially captured by commerce. The practice survived the capture.

The Zapatistas — Chose NAFTA implementation day deliberately. Not seeking state power. Seeking to not need it. Building parallel institutions outside the Code’s architecture. Still operating. Still small.

ART AND WITNESS

William Blake — Named the mind-forged manacles. Printed his own books. Died in obscurity singing. The Code couldn’t capture what it couldn’t see was happening.

Thoreau — One night in jail. How little is actually required. Gandhi read him. King read him. The transmission running person to person across a century.

Ursula K. Le Guin — Made alternatives imaginable. The Code’s deepest power is foreclosing imagination. Her entire body of work was a sustained assault on that foreclosure.

THE FOUR

Jesus — Radical economic inversion. The excluded at the table. The eye of the needle. Captured into empire within three centuries.

Buddha — Attacked the wanting-self directly. No fixed self means no position to defend. The sitting practice survived the institutional capture.

Lao Tzu — Refused the frame entirely. The water wearing the stone. The Tao Te Ching surviving its own institutionalization. Still arriving without knocking.

Mohammad — Zakat as obligatory redistribution. Usury forbidden. The ummah beyond tribe. Captured within a generation. The original transmission still present underneath.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
